Santa Claus Meets the Grim Reaper

The Christmas Holidays are set at the Capricorn Solstice, as are many other sacred observances. The Solstice marks where the sign Sagittarius ends and Capricorn begins. Sagittarius correlates with fun, abundance, and plenty of good stuff. Jupiter, the Sag ruler, is closely akin to Santa. But at the solstice, the vibrations change to the clear sight and objectivity of Capricorn. We have Santa morphing into The Grim Reaper—that guy you see with a sickle on all the New Year’s Eve cartoons. This year the planet of transformation and death, Pluto, is right at this point. Let us look more deeply at the old "gifts under the tree" versus “lump of coal” paradox of this season.

The sign Sagittarius is ruled by the planet Jupiter. Jupiter has many images, among them the Divine Teacher or Guru, and Santa Claus. The subsequent sign, Capricorn, is ruled by Saturn. Saturn is the Divine Grandfather or Grandmother. But Saturn is also Father Time and the Grim Reaper.

Jupiter can range from hopeless and dogmatic, to approval seeking and excessive, but is mature and stable when expansive and wise. Similarly, Saturn ranges from bitter and cruel and controlling to ambitious and acquisitive, but when mature and healthy, Saturn thrives on solitude.

Each of us embodies some degree of both qualities. We have our own internal Santa bestowing blessings, and our own internal Grim Reaper taking them away. A healthy, mature life is a creative mixture of the Jupiter’s expansion principle and the Saturn’s contraction principle. Most of us prefer Jupiter to Saturn, though. By secondary progression, a way astrologers use to measure our lessons of this lifetime, usually Jupiter and Saturn make so few changes that they are not important (since they just maintain the influence they gave at birth). However, should either planet change signs (or houses) by secondary progression, this is major!

A more common occurrence is the transits of Jupiter and Saturn. Jupiter brings his largesse all around the zodiac in 12 years, about one year per sign. Saturn takes 29 years to go around the circle, about 21 years in each sign. This is good news/bad news. Good news if Jupiter is doing good things and Saturn is not causing troubles. However, the bad news is that it does not last.

How are Jupiter and Saturn influencing you? May it all be good!

The British Isles in World History/Astrology

When we turn our eyes on Britain, we have the Coronation of William the Conqueror as the Foundation Chart for what is today the United Kingdom. (We will take up the most-used chart, that of the Unification with Ireland on 01 Jan 1801, at another time.) The coronation of William the Conqueror was at noon on 25 December 1066 at Westminster Abbey. The Sun is the most elevated planet, and participates in the tightest aspects, a quadruple-parallel involving Sun, Midheaven, Pluto and Uranus! Other prominent aspect patterns include an Arrow Yod[1] with Jupiter as the focal planet in quincunx to Moon and Mars and opposed by Pluto. Also featured is an Earth Grand Trine of Mercury, Saturn and Neptune. That Earth Grand Trine is also part of a Kite pattern because Saturn is opposed by the Moon.

William the Conqueror was born in Falaise, France at 4:45 pm local time on 20 October 1028. Until he conquered England in 1066 at age 38, he was known as William the Bastard, due to his illegitimacy. William’s chart features a prominent Sun, closely conjunct both the Moon and the Descendant in Scorpio. Another indication of eminence is Pluto widely conjunct the Midheaven, and in a Kite[2] pattern, a conjoined Kite pattern, with the mixed grand trine of Neptune, Uranus, Sun and Moon. William’s horoscope also features a Scorpio stellium, two yods, and a Grand Air Trine of Jupiter, Mercury and Neptune. The tightest aspects are Uranus’s contra-parallel and opposition to Pluto, and Jupiter’s contra-parallel to the Midheaven.

What does all this mean? Why is it useful today? First, the sign Leo and the Sun, its ruler, do signify kings and people who are highly influential “like” a king. Second, the house positions and degrees in the charts discussed are important to keep in mind when looking at current events and predicting future events. Great Britain, in particular, has a pronounced Leo-Capricorn bias. The US and Canadian Suns are opposed, very closely, to the Sun in both of the widely used charts for the United Kingdom, our father-country.

What else can you learn? Parallel aspects, in which both planets are at the same (or opposite) declinations, are important. They also are frequently hidden by the standard way of looking at chart aspects by longitude. Further, aspect patterns, in which three or more planets form a pattern by aspect, also seem to coincide with important events and important people.

While Britain has the Leo-Capricorn bias in successful ruler’s charts, other countries probably have different signs which better describe prominent people.

You, as an individual, may feel a greater or lesser connection to the British Isles. Most likely your horoscope, and especially if you have a harmonious relationship with the sign Capricorn, will indicate your affinity to Britain. Perhaps in the future we can look at a widely different national horoscope.

These remarks, above are excerpted from a presentation I gave to the Knoxville, Tennessee, Astrology Meet Up. Go to www.meetup.com for information about the Knoxville group or other groups in your local area.

[1] An Arrow Yod has an opposition to the focal planet of the yod. Thus the focal planet has three planets (or more) arrayed against it, two by quincunx (150° aspects) and one opposition (180°).
[2] A Kite pattern is a grand trine with another planet opposing one of the three trine planets and sextile both the remaining planets. The grand trine planet with the opposition is the focus planet of the kite pattern.

Mercury Retrograde September 2009

Hi,

Mercury spends about 3 and a half weeks retrograde three times a year. So, it is not the end of the world. That said, here are some particulars that might help.

Mercury retrograde is a perfect time to re-do anything, especially anything that is Mercury-ruled, like going over and improving drafts of written materials, organizing file systems, decluttering, handling health issues that you've neglected and so forth.

If you have personal points and planets in Gemini and Virgo, you need to slow down more than others, as your natural way of being is to proceed without analysis. Whichever houses of your horoscope are ruled by Mercury, that is you have Gemini or Virgo on the cusps of those houses, needs special care. This is why those with Gemini or Virgo on the Ascendant, the cusp of the 1st house, need to be more careful--as the first house has to do with your whole being!

So, does Mercury retrograde until the end of the month mean that you will necessarily have problems? No! But be very careful with any Mercury matters.

Leo, Charlemagne, and Charlemagne's Coronation

The sign Leo is associated with royalty and kings and queens. Leo is the sign following Cancer, the sign that has to do with family ties. Royalty implies authority, lineage, biological connection with other royals, charisma and wealth. Not every king has all those qualities. Leo builds on the family connections of Cancer and contrasts with the anarchy and egalitarianism of Aquarius. Kings and Queens usually have the sign Leo or the Sun prominent in their horoscopes.

In astrology we look at the chart for a country or region or era to understand more about that matter. The whole of Western Civilization is said to be under the chart determined when Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne at 12:09 pm in Rome on 25 December 800 CE.

Charlemagne or Carolus Magnus, meaning Charles the Great, who lived from (742/747[1] – 28 January 814) was King of the Franks from 768 to his death. He expanded the Frankish kingdoms into a Frankish Empire that incorporated much of Western and Central Europe. During his reign, he conquered Italy and was crowned Imperator Augustus by Pope Leo III[2] on 25 December 800, in an attempted revival of the Roman Empire in the West. Through his foreign conquests and internal reforms, Charlemagne helped define Western Europe and the Middle Ages. His rule is also associated with the Carolingian Renaissance, a revival of art, religion, and culture.

In Charlemagne’s horoscope—which admittedly is speculative—we have many planets high in the horoscope conjunct, some widely, the Midheaven. Charlemagne has Leo rising. His ruling planet, the Sun, is conjunct the Midheaven and Venus and Jupiter. Sun, Venus and Jupiter constitute a stellium in Aries, as well as being the focal point of a configuration known as a talent triangle[3]. [A talent triangle is two planets in trine with both sextile the same planet at their midpoint. In interpretation it indicates a talent which is available to us, but not “fated.” We aren’t compelled to use that talent; it is optional.] For Charlemagne, the talent of Sun, Venus and Jupiter in Aries in the ninth house is the opportunity for becoming a king and later an emperor.

What else do we know about Charlemagne’s horoscope? His Grand Air Trine means he was able to think and speak well. He had the gift of intelligence, thinking clearly, communicating well, and persuading others. His ability to persuade was something he could do by his power of position—kingship—or by his powers of understanding how the world worked (9th house) and being able to speak well. Charlemagne had a Cardinal T-square[4], with Mercury participating out-of-sign, as Mercury was in Pisces. Squares generally, t-squares and cardinal t-squares in particular, motivate people to act. One did not conquer and rule half of Europe without seizing the initiative! Another interesting aspect pattern in Charlemagne’s chart was what is called a Hard Rectangle [four or more planets connected by semi-squares and oppositions]. The Hard Rectangle indicates someone with great will power who would prevail or die trying.

Was there a softer side to Charlemagne? He had Sun in Aries, Leo rising and Moon in Capricorn. Not much of a soft side. Compare Charlemagne to his modern day “twin,” former Vice-President Albert Gore, who has the same combination of these three signs for Sun, Moon, Ascendant.

Let’s look at the horoscope for the Coronation of Charlemagne as Emperor. Here again we have the Sun angular, conjunct the Midheaven quite closely. Aries is rising. Note that the Sun of the coronation chart is 8 Capricorn 28, and Charlemagne’s natal Moon is at 8 Capricorn 18. Also note the coronation Ascendant at 18 Aries 00 and Charlemagne’s stellium of Venus-Sun-Jupiter at 9-16 Aries!

The coronation chart is often considered the Foundation Chart for Western Civilization. The tightest aspects in the chart are the Sun parallel Midheaven, both parallel the North Node. Then look at the close quintile[5] aspect from Sun to Uranus and another close quintile aspect from Pluto to the Ascendant. Finally consider the Jupiter sextile to the Midheaven. Quintiles are aspects of creativity and invention, both of which flourished following Charlemagne’s coronation and have continued to this day.

Unlike Charlemagne’s chart, the coronation chart does have softer placements. Look particularly at the 12th house, which has both Jupiter and Moon in Pisces, though too far from each other to be in a traditional aspect. Pisces is perhaps the softest and most gentle of signs, and is especially associated with Christianity. Here this is a clear indicator of the partnership between secular and religious authority that, again, has continued to the present.

People who share the Sun in Capricorn and Moon in Pisces combination include: John Denver, Ben Franklin, J. Edgar Hoover, Martin Luther King, Jr., Rush Limbaugh, Michelle Obama (if born 11 am or later), Edgar Allen Poe, Elvis Presley, and J. R. R. Tolkein.

[1] His horoscope is set for 02 April 742 CE at 12:30 pm local time in Herstal, Belgium.
[2] This was a very politically astute move, combining secular with religious authority to lay claim to the highest political office.
[3] Here it is a “conjoined” talent triangle. Actually three talent triangles with Venus, Sun and Jupiter all constituting the focal point!
[4] Another “conjoined” configuration, this time the t-square. One t-square has Pluto-Moon-Mercury, which is mixed sign; the other is a pure cardinal t-square of Pluto-Moon-Jupiter.
[5] A quintile aspect is one fifth of the 360 degree circle, or 72°.

Love, Truth and Power in Astrology

One way to look at the planets is to see them as indicating Love, Truth or Power. Each of these can be viewed as primitive (self and physical body focused), average (working within your social network) or transcendent (where you desire this for all).

In Western Astrology we typically use 10 planets (we include the lights—the Sun and Moon). With three categories, and three levels, we have one planet left over. That would be the Sun, which is seen to be the self. Ultimately the Sun is the enlightened or integrated self, the goal of the spiritual seeker. Thus the goal of enlightenment is to know and make peace with your other nine major planets—Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto!

Let us begin with Love. Love = Moon + Venus + Neptune. The most primitive expression of love is the Moon. The Moon is about our comfort level, our bodily comfort, nurturing those with whom we have a body-tie. Thus the natal Moon indicates our relative ease with up-close and personal expressions of love. Within our network, Venus is the planet of love. Venus expands beyond family and kin to flirt and attract “new blood.” Often in the literal way of expanding the gene pool. Again, the condition of natal Venus says much about your expression of love in social interaction. Finally Neptune is spiritual love, love for all beings, love for the soul of all.

Briefly, having the Moon adversely aspected[1] indicates a lack of nurturing in your infancy and youth which interferes with your accepting and giving love later in life. Having Venus adversely aspected indicates early peer group problems that cause problems in social interactions later in life. The adverse aspects of Neptune can mean taking Neptune’s “Low Road” in life—primarily addictions. Please note that having any planet unaspected[2] may be as difficult as having it adversely aspected as it indicates a lack of connection and integration of that planet’s energy into your conscious life.

Let us look at Power. Power = Mars + Saturn + Pluto. The most primitive expression of power is Mars, the strength and assertiveness to make your needs known and to force others to serve those needs. Saturn expands your power into the community to create systems—Law—that insure that your needs are met. Finally Pluto creates world conditions that require balancing everyone’s needs. Pluto requires that the higher needs are met without consideration for any individual or group. Problems with Mars mean either avoiding asserting yourself, or over-doing it. Problems with Saturn mean either thwarting the rules, or overdoing them. Problems with Pluto may put you as an unwitting agent of Pluto or a victim…

Moving on to Truth. Truth = Mercury + Jupiter + Uranus. Mercury is the most primitive form of truth. Mercury jabbers away indiscriminately, talking in superficial, unexamined ways about every subject, including subjects others wish to avoid. Jupiter looks more closely and more deeply. However Jupiter represents established wisdom, he does not move into new territory. So Mercury can be glib and thoughtless, while Jupiter can expound on platitudes. Uranus is plugged into the mental realm and able to access new information. Uranus is the transcendent expression of Truth.

A badly aspected Mercury can mean you lack the ability to express yourself, or you are too expressive. Mercury does not care overly much about the Truth; in some cases Mercury indicates thieves and white collar criminals. Jupiter is concerned with ethics and moral systems. If badly aspected it can go either way—being too concerned with community morals and not necessarily taking care of individual behavior. Not following the precepts that you are teaching. Uranus in bad aspect is totally outside societal conventions—thus the association of Uranus with the gay movement, revolutionaries, and others outside conventional society. The squelched expression of Uranus is to be totally closed to new ideas, and totally conventional.

Let’s look at some example charts.

Love: The triple conjunction of Moon, Venus and Neptune is shown in the chart of Robert Redford with those planets in Virgo in the sixth house of habits. The grand trine of the three love planets is illustrated in three charts—Walt Whitman, Sri Aurobindo, and Ted Haggard—showing the various ways this can be expressed.

Power: the triple conjunction of Mars, Saturn and Pluto is shown in the chart of Al Gore, former Vice President, where they lie in Leo in the 1st house trine his Sun. The Grand trine is shown in the chart of Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State, where two planets are in water, the third in fire, occupying the houses of communication: 3, 7 and 11.

Truth: the Grand Air Trine of Mercury, Jupiter and Uranus is in the chart of Poet Omar Khayam, still popular after 1000 years! Note that Pluto figures into this configuration.

[1] Adversely aspected, meaning the preponderance of aspects is negative: squares or oppositions with any planets or conjunctions (and sometimes trines) with Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
[2] Lacking these aspects: parallel or contra-parallel within 1.25°, conjunction or opposition within 8°, trine or square within 6°, sextile within 3°, quincunx within 1.5°.

Money in the Horoscope

What indicators in the horoscope show money? How can you identify where money can be found in your life? When your financial life will be better?

Astrologers have many different ways of looking at money in the horoscope. Lois M. Rodden, the author of Money: How to Find It with Astrology, Focuses on the earth houses (2, 6, and 10), having to do with mundane life, and the water houses (4, 8 & 12), which have to do with wealth. Basically, you look to the money houses to see where your money is coming from. Where is the ruler of the second house? Is it tenanted? How about the sixth and tenth houses? Planets in the wealth houses, 4, 8 and 12, suggest independent means.

Let’s focus on what the houses mean in regards to money:

1st House:
Self employment, relies on beauty or physical attributes.

7th House:
Through spouse, counseling, partnerships

2nd House:
Gains money from collectibles, portable items of high value, jewelry

8th House:
Banking, finance, insurance, undertakers, detectives and police.

3rd House:
Sales in general, communications, writing, teaching K-12

9th House:
Law, religion, higher education, writing and publishing.

4th House:
Real Estate, family money, farming

10th House:
Own business, major corporations, politics

5th House:
Gambling, stock market investments, arts

11th House:
Organizations, trade groups, consortiums

6th House:
Crafts, health, medicine, provider of services to individuals, households and businesses.

12th House:
Is supported by others, retired, disabled, imprisoned, vow of poverty…

Venus rules Small Money, or Personal Money, and Pluto rules Big Money; as they are the natural rulers of the 2nd and 8th houses. Big Money means money of society, money of organizations, other people's money... so, money that you as an individual do not control. When Pluto changes signs, as it just did, Big Money makes important changes too. Economic conditions change in ways that create new opportunities and close old options. The lesson is to work with Pluto. To see what Pluto brings to your natal chart. (You can also consider how Pluto impacts the charts of any organizations or cities, states and countries.) You need to work with, collaborate with, Pluto. Pluto is like the 400 pound gorilla!

Take a look at your natal chart. Pluto indicates where Big Money lies. Transiting Pluto, now at about 3° Capricorn, indicates the current picture of Big Money in your life.

Venus, on the other hand, is a force we can directly use. Venus is where you attract money. Look to your natal Venus for your life-long ability to attract money, and to the current position of your secondary progressed Venus for your current opportunities.

A whole different approach to money in the horoscope is presented by the Magi Society in their book Love and Money. They look at four aspects: conjunction, trine, parallel and contra-parallel, with narrow orbs[1], that indicate money. There are five so-called Golden Linkages: Venus-Chiron, Jupiter-Chiron, Jupiter-Pluto, Pluto-Chiron, and Venus-Pluto. There are five Silver Linkages: Venus-Neptune, Venus-Uranus, Venus-Jupiter, Jupiter-Uranus, and Jupiter-Neptune. These ten aspects, together called Success Linkages, can be formed within a single horoscope, by transit, by progression, and with another person or with a corporate entity. When formed within the person’s chart, it is a life-long indication of some degree of wealth. When formed between charts, it indicates financial success while the parties are joined—during the marriage or partnership or period of employment. When formed by transit or progression, make hay while the sun shines, as this is temporary!

When we examine birth charts of notable people who are multi-millionaires and billionaires, let’s ask the question, “Who am I?” Here we look to a major life emphasis by the sign and house of the chart ruler.

Second, where is Venus, and where is Pluto? Do they contact each other? Now look further to spot any of the Magi Society enhancement aspects of financial success.

Now, what would it take to make your chart financially successful?

[1] The conjunction and trine and generally all longitude aspects would be within 3°. The aspects of declination would be within 1.2°.

Keep it Simple...

Hi,

The more astrology I do, the more important the simple things are. I will be doing a presentation in a few weeks, three weeks, about how the Ascendant influences ALL of our relationships.

We are pre-programmed to be our Ascendant, and to attract our Descendant! This presents lots of problems in relationships, even for those few relationships in which the two Ascendants are the natural compliments of each other.

Consider one famous couple, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. He has a Sagittarius Ascendant. He naturally is a teacher, and explorer, a comic. He gravitates toward the Gemini rising, witty flirtatious type.

Angelina has Cancer rising. Her maternal and family instincts are strong. Parenting and family are priorities. Her natural compliment is Capricorn, the serious, responsible type.

So, even though we know they have a lot of chemistry as a couple, we also know that there is some dissonance, in that each is trying to force the other into a mold. Brad wants Angelina to lighten up. She wants him to be serious.

What message does your Ascendant send?

Astrology & Health

Today I'll be presenting about Astrology & Health to a group in Knoxville, Tennessee. I enjoy doing these presentations. Among other things, I always learn, or re-learn, something. In today's case, the blindingly obvious.

About the 6th house. It's always presented as the house of health, but I only now know why. Because the 6th house has to do with your habits and your routine. Your health DIRECTLY proceeds from your daily habits.

If you exercise each day, you'll have fitness and defined muscles.

If you have a cinnamon bun and latte each day at 10:30 am, then you will look like you do that.

So, you choose your habits. The outcome is directly related to your habitual activities!

To look more closely at the astrology, the sign or signs on that house, the planets inside, and the planet ruling the house all impact your ability to maintain positive habits.

Speaking as a person with the Moon in the 6th house, the habit to seek comfort can lead to results I don't want to live with--extra weight among them. So I need to be aware of my normal responses and take action to move in the right direction.

Confessions

I've been thinking about various topics to pursue here, versus in my newsletter or in my list group.

Here are some possible topics. Let me know if any of these seem more suited to one venue over another:

The Saturn-Uranus opposition after this last impact.

Health and Astrology--am presenting this Sunday.

Astrology and weight issues.

Looking at the sequence of degrees in the horoscope, i.e. what is the earliest planet by degree in any sign? What's the latest? This relates to how we interact with our environoment. Part B is, naturally, do we count Chiron, the Nodes, the big four asteroids, ALL the asteroids--I only have 600 something on my program...

Anyway, do any of those topics grab you?

The Aquarius Solar Eclipse

Hi,

We receive a lot of energy in the next 24 hours. Energy that will move us--hopefully in the direction we want.

The eclipse occurs at 2:55 am on 26 Jan 2009 for Washington, DC. Adjust the time if you are not on Eastern Standard Time.

The eclipse degree is 6°30' of Aquarius. This forms a fourth harmonic aspect to 6°30' of all the fixed signs and an 8th harmonic aspect with 21° 30' of the mutable signs.

One way to think of it is that the impulse of the eclipse is diffused through the zodiac, like a prism diffracts light, with some degrees receiving more and others less.

How will this pulse of energy hit you? We all want to know about our own charts and those of our loved ones.

Think of this as a surge of energy hitting the eight degree areas mentioned above. All the planets at or near those degrees will be impacted.

In addition, pay special attention to the house where 6+ Aquarius lies in your horoscope. Expect changes in matters having to do with that house.

Today's Super Moon at 21°02' Capricorn/Cancer

Today is a Super Moon, a New or Full Moon that coincides with the Moon's closest approach to the earth. As astrological pioneer Richard Nolle has pointed out, weather extremes and earth movements tend to happen within a couple of days of the Super Moon.

One such event was the tsunami on Dec 26th several years ago that killed hundreds of thousands of people in the Indian Ocean and Pacific.

Today's Super Moon, which will be exact at 10:27 pm EST, has already created record setting flooding in the Pacific Northwest. What more is to come?

For sure, this Super Moon will be a major pulse to everyone and hit them in a way that matches with where these degrees lie in their horoscopes.

May this move you towards your goals!

See Life, and Astrology, as Polarity

I have many thoughts about how much polarity impacts us all. It will be many separate postings to get much of this communicated, but I'll start here.

Spiritually, the highest state is Oneness--or Non-dual reality. However, almost no one spends much time there. Instead we exist in Duality. Self and Other. Me and You. Mine and Yours. My friend and Your friend. My country and Your country. My money and Your money.

See a pattern?

Astrologically this is represented many ways. Quickly, you can identify with any part of your horoscope and project the other. So you could identify with your Sun and project your Moon--who are all those emotional women following me around?--or vice versa--who are those egotistical Leos in my life?

However, the most basic way we identify as self and other is the axis of the Ascendant and the Descendant. This is a vitally important way we look at the world and it has major implications in how we view all our significant relationships--including relatives, friends, work colleagues--not just our One And Only!

Since I have a Capricorn Ascendant, I am slotted by many into the unemotional and ambitious category. Because that is how they respond to Capricorn! I, meanwhile, attract many people with Cancer Rising, and they can be incredibly caught up in their stories, their families and their emotional drama. Now, in fairness to most of them, they are just regular people. And when they aren't in relationship with me they are less demonstrative of the pregnancy hormone syndrome.

What is the way out of this dilemma? To own my whole chart.

More later.
